Need a quick breakfast or nourishing snack? One may typically reach for granola or trail mix expecting to find a healthy option, but have you ever read an ingredient label on the pre-packaged stuff? It’s often loaded with junk and super high in sugar – which is fine if you’re using it as an energy pick-me-up during a long hike. We like to make our own because it’s cheaper, super simple and we can limit the ingredients and sugar content (and we personally think ours tastes better (; ).

Here’s what you’ll need:

1 cup gluten free rolled oats
1/2 cup sliced almonds
1/2 cup unsweetened coconut flakes
1/2 tsp cinnamon
pinch of sea salt
1 Tbs coconut oil
3 tsp maple syrup

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 300F
  2. Combine oats, almonds, coconut flakes, cinnamon, and salt in a large bowl
  3. In a small bowl, mix coconut oil and maple syrup
  4. Pour the mixture over dry ingredients and stir until well coated
  5. Spread granola onto baking sheet lined with parchment paper
  6. Bake for 15-20 minutes, stirring after about ten minutes
  7. Remove from oven once the granola is golden
