I know you’re not rolling into the summer season without pulling out your grill and making this Homemade Barbecue Sauce. A few years ago I began my recipe testing journey experimenting with small add-ins to my normal meals – sauces especially. You see, I was eating the same old, boring meals: lean protein, fresh veggies, and likely some form of carb/in-tact grain/sweet potato, etc.
…Anyway, I would get bored eating the same old thing every day, and I would usually revert to hot sauce on everything (I still put hot sauce on everything). Once summer rolled around, it was barbecue sauce central. I was searching for that classic barbecue flavor paired with a sweet and smokey sauce, but every single bottle out there had about 50 ingredients on the label, and the first three were some form of sugar -jeez. I was like…
Can’t a girl get a barbecue sauce around here that isn’t going to give her pre-diabetes!?
So I started testing my own barbecue sauce at home. The following recipe came to be one of my staples. It’s a Homemade Barbecue Sauce that is perfect for brushing on your protein or veggie as you’re cooking it on the grill, or you can thicken it slightly and use it as a dip for the finished product.
Here’s what you’ll need…
15 oz can tomato sauce
3 tbs maple syrup
3 tbs apple cider vinegar
2 tbs coconut aminos or soy sauce
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp oregano
1/2 tsp liquid smoke (optional)
Directions:
- Whisk together all ingredients until smooth, or add ingredients to a mason jar and shake it up
- If you want a thicker sauce for dipping, add ingredients to a small saucepan and allow sauce to bubble on medium heat for 5-7 minutes
